5 Star Co-op

On August 31, 2016, Pioneer Electric was recognized as a 5-Star Co-op for its involvement in the Co-ops vote program. The Co-ops vote program was established by the Nation Rural Electric Cooperative Association and was designed to inspire cooperative members to have their voice be heard in the upcoming election season. Pioneer Electric was recognized for its involvement in the program and for reinforcing its message to members.

“Part of what makes us a cooperative is democratic control from our members,” said Pioneer Electric Communications Specialist, Drew Waechter. “It’s the collection of voices working together, ensuring that their voice and opinions are being represented. The same could be said for our government. In remaining silent we turnover this right and lose the opportunity to make an impact. That is why we wanted to encourage our members to let their voice be heard, regardless of who they support.”

Throughout the year, Pioneer Electric has supported the campaign by placing a sign in the front lobby and promoting the program on social media. In addition, they also hosted a candidate meet and greet where the community was invited to meet state legislative candidates.

With the general election just around the corner, Waechter hopes that the campaign has helped inspire members to go out and vote.

“To often we let the turbulence and taboo of the season keep us from voting,” said Waechter. “The sinking feeling of ‘my vote doesn’t matter’ starts to take hold and you can feel stifled. We wanted to build the confidence of voters by arming them with knowledge about their candidates and allowing them the opportunity to form their own judgments.”
