As part of our commitment to our communities, Pioneer Electric offers several Youth Programs that provide informal and formal educational opportunities to young people in southwest Kansas. Our Youth Programs include tours, scholarships and internships.
Any high school sophomore or junior in the Pioneer Electric service area whose parents or guardians reside in the territory served by Pioneer Electric may apply for the annual Youth Tours. These all-expense-paid educational trips to Washington, D.C. or Steamboat Springs, Colorado are sponsored by Pioneer Electric and the Kansas Electric Cooperatives, Inc., of Topeka. The students selected to attend the youth tours shall have parents that reside in Pioneer Electric’s service territory or attend one of the following high schools: Elkhart, Stanton County, Hugoton, Lakin, Moscow, Rolla, Syracuse or Ulysses. Students that attend Sublette or Satanta High School should apply for the youth tour program through Southern Pioneer Electric Company.
Washington, D.C. Youth Tour
The “Government In Action” Youth Tour to Washington, D.C. takes place each June. During this week-long tour, students will visit historic sites, attend educational sessions, meet with Kansas elected officials and tour the White House.

As part of the selection process, participating youth take a short written exam and attend a personal interview conducted by a panel of judges. The exam covers information furnished by Pioneer Electric.
